Waltina Currie (Farrell, PA), a member of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) from Laurel Technical Institute (LTI), Sharon, has returned from the State Leadership Conference in Lancaster, PA, where she received a gold medal in Medical Spelling. LTI’s HOSA chapter newsletter, HOSA Happenings, also won “Best in the State” for the 3rd consecutive year. Both Ms. Currie and the chapter newsletter are eligible to compete for national awards during the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, FL, in June.

In addition to competitions, LTI’s HOSA students participate in community service projects. During the past year, they volunteered at WaterFire events and at the Community Library’s Wine and Cheese Fundraiser. They also made Red Cross Comfort Kits, provided screening at several health fairs, provided administrative support for community flu shot clinics, and teamed up with LTI’s Cosmetology Clinic and St. John’s Episcopal Church to provide free holiday portraits for persons in need.

Ms. Currie is the newly elected President of the LTI Sharon HOSA chapter. She had previously served as the chairperson of the education committee. Deborah Anderson (Hermitage, PA) is immediate past president and served as the newsletter editor. Ms. Anderson will be presented with the newsletter award during a ceremony at the school today.

LTI’s faculty advisors for HOSA are Tracy Schliep, RN (Sharon, PA), and Paula Listopad, RN (Sharon, PA). Ms. Schliep serves as the Northwest Region Director to Penn HOSA Board of Directors.

HOSA is a national student organization of 120,000 members dedicated to promoting career opportunities in the health care field as well as supporting education and development of health care professionals. Student chapters are organized for high school through college levels, encompassing a wide variety of health care professions. Pennsylvania has 108 chapters with a membership of over 3,000. LTI Announces Second New Trade Program

Industrial Electromechanical Technician Program Slated to Start in May
Laurel Technical Institute (LTI) will start the first class for its Industrial Electromechanical Technician program this May. The new program, to be offered at the school’s 12,000 square foot industrial training facility on Dock Street in Sharon, PA, was initiated to address an ongoing need for industrial maintenance and field service technicians in the region. The school developed the program in conjunction with an advisory committee comprised of energy companies and manufacturing facilities in Northwestern Pennsylvania.

The 12-month, three-semester program will prepare graduates for entry-level positions in industrial maintenance, industrial machine repair, electro-mechanical technology, industrial mechanics and maintenance mechanics. The students will also train in several components of basic industrial electricity. Additionally, the program will train in the field of mechatronics. Students will learn to install, troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade electronic and computer-controlled mechanical systems, such as assembly machines. Courses will also be taught in blueprint reading, PLC programming, and mechanical systems, which will teach students to make housings, fittings, and fixtures. Finally, instruction will be given in the repair and calibration of hydraulic and pneumatic assemblies.

Nancy Decker, LTI President, says, “There is an identified shortage of multi-craft maintenance technicians, not just in Northwestern Pennsylvania but nationwide, and we are continuing to work to prepare individuals with proper skills so they are positioned to earn a diploma and join the work force.” She called training “a great opportunity for young people, displaced workers, and anyone who wishes to expand his or her career opportunities. We’re limited in the number we can accommodate so the earlier prospective students apply, the better.”

The program is also being instituted at LTI’s sister facility, Laurel Business Institute (LBI) in Uniontown, PA, and the first class will start on May 27, 2014, in both locations. Students in that first cohort will graduate in Spring 2015.
